flash preloaders
If you do a search for Flash preloaders, you'll find a dizzying array of articles about various methods for constructing your own "simple" preloader. Simple my ass. I tried 3 completely differnet methods for constructing a decent preloader. I also tried raping some old preloader code of mine from my previous employer. Then I found a nice little site that sells premade flash bits. I generally balk at the idea of spending money like that, but I wasted more time trying to figure it out myself. Metaphor: sure I can mow my own lawn, but I'd rather pay some else to do it. Also, sometimes the internet sucks for good information. (In the case of Wikipedia, that "sometimes" becomes "always".)
